The Just War Newsletter is an
electronic publication to announce new developments for researchers, teachers
and practitioners whose work involves the doctrine of just war. Written and
published by Michael Kocsis, it serves anyone working in academia, the public
service, non-governmental organizations, and the military.

2. CONFERENCES AND
EVENTS
Last
March 17, the Faculty of Philosophy of the Dominican University
College in Ottawa held its Eleventh Annual Symposium on War. Themes included
the nature of war in our time and the relevance of just war theory for
justifying military actions today. The symposium was organized by Eduardo
Andújar of Dominican University College.
An event entitled “Peace
beyond Justice: Compromise and modus
vivendi” was hosted by the Facoltà di Filosofia and
Centro Studi di Etica e Politica at
the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (Milan) from March
20-21. A number of scholars from the Universities of Milan,
Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Hamburg and Eastern Piedmont presented papers and
fielded questions in discussion.
A two day interdisciplinary
workshop on “Hugo Grotius’s Place in the History of Moral and Political
Philosophy” was held on April 5 and 6 at the Institute of Philosophy in Leuven (Belgium). The keynote
lecture was delivered by Annabel Brett
(Cambridge). Erik De Bom and Johan Olsthoorn organized the event. The

A workshop on Culture and
Diversity in the Canadian Armed Forces was held on May 4 in
Ottawa. The event was organized by the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran
Health Research (CIMVHR) and the Center for International and
Defense Policy (CIDP) in a joint initiative for the advancement
of research in this emerging area of research.
A workshop on “Forgiveness,
Apology and Reconciliation” was hosted by the University of Manchester’s
Philosophy Department on May 25-26. The two-day interdisciplinary event
explored interpersonal and political aspects of apology and forgiveness. The organizers
were Paula Satne (University of Manchester) and Cristina Roadevin (University

A workshop on “Democracy in
Practice” took place on May 26 at the University of Geneva. Hosted
by the Departments of Classics and History, the event explored questions about
democratic epistemology, democratic morality, deliberative democracy, and multilingual
democracy.
The 3rd Annual
Conference of the Centre for the Study of Global Ethics at the University of
Birmingham was on the topic Humanitarian Ethics and Action. The event took
place June 1-2 at the Edgbaston Campus, University of Birmingham. Keynote speakers included Simon
Caney, Cecile Fabre, Helen Frowe and Hugo Slim. The

A two-day workshop held from June 13-14 examined arguments for and against world government from theoretical and
empirical perspectives. The first day was spent in the Collegium
Helveticum (Zurich) and the second in the Zukunftskolleg (Konstanz Germany). Speakers
included Marco Cellini, Daniele Archibugi, Luiss Guido, Eva Erman, Henning
Hahn, Raffaele Marchetti, András Miklós, Attila Tanyi, Alice Pinheiro Walla,
Timothy Sinclair, Torbjörn Tännsjö, and Joachim Wündisch. It was organizaed by Attila

An international conference
on “The Future of
Republicanism: Liberal, Critical, Radical?” was held at the University of York
(UK) on June 26-27. The event considered recent revivals of civic
republican political philosophy and distinct and arguably antagonistic
tendencies within republican thought. Cécile Laborde and Philip Pettit delivered

An International Symposium on
“Strengthening Peace through Education” will take place from August 9-11
in conjunction with the 72nd
Nagasaki Peace Memorial and Remembrance Ceremony. The event will take place at
the ANA Crowne Plaza (Nagasaki), 1-18 Minamiyamatemachi, Nagasaki City, Japan,
and it will allow participants the opportunity to visit the Nagasaki Peace Park
which has been nominated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Extensive information

A panel on
“Historic Injustice, Trust and Moral Repair” will take place from September 6-9th
at the University of Oslo as part of the Standing Group on Political Theory on
Forms of Injustice (a division of the European Consortium for Political
research (ECPR)). The panel will explore questions about collective distrust,
obligation, legitimacy, culpability, and “moral repair”. For details and access

An event on “Collectivism
and the Morality of War” will be hosted at the University of Manchester as part
of the MANCEPT 2017 series of Workshops in Political Theory. Taking place from
September 11-13th, the event’s convener is Saba
Bazargan-Forward (UC San Diego). Papers in philosophy addressing group agency,
collective responsibility, and complicity as these apply to the morality of war
are invited. The workshop will help explore “anti-revisionist” alternatives to

The
Peace and Conflict Studies Association of Canada (PACS-Can) will host a
workshop from September 21-22 on “Canadian Peacekeeping: Where Have We Been?
Where Should We Go?” in collaboration with Waterloo’s Balsillie School of
International Affairs. Proposals are invited for formal paper presentations, a
number of which will appear in an edited volume or special issue of Peace Research: The Canadian Journal of
Peace and Conflict Studies. The event’s purpose is to examine the
transformation of peacekeeping, dilemmas facing Canadian policy-makers, and
ways in which Canada might contribute to current and future UN peace support

The 8th Annual conference of the Canadian
Institute for Military and Veteran Health Forum (CIMVHR) will take place in Toronto
from September 25th to 27th in conjunction with the

The
2017 Ontario Legal Philosophy Partnership’s Philosophy of Law Conference will
take place from September 28 to October 1 in Burlington (Ontario).
This year’s theme is “Governance, Legality and Political Morality beyond the
State”, and its purpose is to raise and explore many legal and philosophical
questions arising in the realm of global governance. A range of prominent experts
in philosophy of law will present keynote papers. Conference organizers are
Claudia Emerson, Michael Giudice, Violetta Igneski, Stefan Sciaraffa, Francois
Tanhguay-Renaud, and Wil Waluchow. Additional information is posted on this

The annual meeting of the International Society for Military Ethics (ISME)
will take place in Cleveland at Case Western Reserve University on January 25-26,
2018. The event’s theme is “Culture, Diversity, and Military Ethics: Intersections
of Military and Civilian Culture at a Time of International Political Upheaval”
and it will focus on three
main research axes: the application of just war theory in asymmetrical
contexts, military ethics and politics (both international and domestic), and
cultural integration, diversity, and globalization. The deadline for

The XXIV World Congress of Philosophy will take place August 13-20 (2018) in Beijing (China) on
the theme “Learning to be Human”. This major event
will be hosted by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies
(FISP) The aims of the 2018 Congress include exploring dimensions of the human
and considering challenges facing humanity as a whole. Those wishing to

Global Justice: Theory Practice Rhetoric

4. CALL FOR PAPERS
The Britain and Ireland
Association for Political Thought welcomes doctoral students in the UK or the
Republic of Ireland to submit original research papers in any area of political
theory. One paper will be chosen as the foundation for a presentation at the
Political Thought Conference 2018 held in Oxford (UK) on January 4-6 2018.
Academic convenors for the conference (Iseult Honohan and Humeira Iqtidar) will
select one original paper for inclusion in the conference programme and the
successful doctoral student will be awarded free conference registration,
accommodation, meals and travel expenses. Submissions should be in MS Word and
should be approximately 5000w not including citations and bibliography. A cover
sheet should include author’s name and contact details, estimated term of
dissertation submission, name(s) and contact details of your supervisor(s),
title of the paper, and abstract. Names and affiliations should not appear in
the essay. The deadline is July 24, 2017 and papers should be submitted by
email to: conference@associationforpoliticalthought.ac.uk
Polity (the journal of the Northeastern
Political Science Association) invites essays in political theory for
publication as regular research articles. Essays are especially welcome if they
work from a variety of approaches in political theory (critical, comparative,
analytic, historical), bring normative, interpretive or conceptual clarity to
key concepts of contemporary political life, bridge sub-field boundaries, and/or
address the politics and ethics of human rights advocacy. Manuscripts will be promptly
assessed and processed through a standard double-blind peer review process. Manuscripts, inquiries and questions about

Annual International Law Summer Institute took place from May 15-19
at the Centre for International Governance Innovation. The program was designed
to provide graduate students studying global governance with a grounding in
public international law and associated processes and institutions. Details are

The Fourth International Summer School in
Peace and Conflict Studies, hosted by the Department of Social and Political
Sciences, University of Cyprus, the International Association of Peace and
Conflict Studies, and the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR)
will take place in Nicosia (Cyprus) from July 9-21. This year’s
theme is “Co-opted Peace and the Pursuit of Justice. Subtitle: Hidden

The Utrecht
University Summer School for 2017 will explore questions of “Value
Pluralism”. Taking place from August 14-18,

Three sections of the PhilPapers database are being overhauled. PhilPapers provides a listing and links to academic publications in
a vast range of philosophical fields. Scholars get access to categorized journal
articles, book chapters and other writings gathered by specialist editors.
Sections on “Ethics and Justification of War”, “Just War Theory” and “Military Ethics” are in the process of expansion and refinement. Newsletter
readers with suggestions about literature that should be included in these

The International Law
Summer Institute at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI)
posts a series of lectures on the theory and practice of international law.
Lectures by prominent scholars of international law discuss topics like gender,
