1. INTRODUCTION
The Just War Newsletter is an
electronic publication for announcements and new developments for researchers,
teachers and practitioners whose work involves the doctrine of just war.
Written and published by Michael Kocsis, it is meant to serve anyone working in
academia, the public service, non-governmental organizations, and the military.

2. CONFERENCES AND
EVENTS
A Workshop on “War and
Sovereignty” was held on May 20th at King’s College London. Several
issues concerning the role of sovereignty in just war were covered in
presentations by Christopher Finlay, Cecile Fabre, Massimo Renzo, and Allen
Buchanan.
A Special Exhibition
Symposia on the topic “Art and War: New Perspectives” was held at New York City’s
The Frick Collection on Friday Sept. 16th. The event was held in conjunction with the exhibition Watteau’s Soldiers: Scenes of Military Life
in Eighteenth-Century France, and it explored questions such as the
following; What representational pressures and aesthetic challenges has war
created? How can art convey the experience of war? What can we learn from
examinations of this relationship during an era of perpetual war? To view the

A conference entitled
“Historical Responsibility: From the Myths of the Past to the Responsibilities
of the Future” took place on September 22-23rd at the Department of
Social Philosophy of Ural Federal University in Yekaterinburg (Russia). A wide range of issues concerning responsibility for
historical wrongs was discussed in multiple panel sessions. Daria Tomiltseva
and Irina Simonova were the event’s organizers.
A conference on “Kant,
Rights and the State” was held the University of Oxford’s Merton College on
September 24-25th. A series of short presentations with lengthy
follow-up discussions concerning Kant’s Doctrine
of Right were included. Luke Davies and Ela Naegele were the event’s
organizers.
An International Conference
on “Women in Modern Wars” was held in Lisbon on September 28-29 at the New
University of Lisbon. Information about presenters, abstracts, and other details

An event to explore the U.S.
Civil War is taking place at the University of Mississippi on October 6-8, organized
by the Center for Civil War Research and the Arch Dalrymple III Department of
History. Entitled “A Just and Lasting Peace: Reconstructions and the Making of
Postwar America”, the event will discuss multiple dimensions of Reconstruction
and its aftermath. Heather
Cox Richardson (Boston College) will deliver the keynote address. For further details

A Conference on
“The Future of Human Dignity: Human Dignity as the Foundation of Human Rights?”
will take place from October 11-13th at the Hotel Mitland, Utrecht (The

will include Deryck Beyleveld, Katrin Flikschuh, Stefan Gosepath, Avishai

Gerald Gaus’s The Tyranny of the Ideal

held in Fromm Hall at the University of San Francisco on November 4th.

On November 16th
an American Academy of Arts and Sciences project on “New Dilemmas in Ethics, Technology
and War” will host a meeting at Stanford University entitled “A Collective
Moral Awakening: Ethical Choices in War and Peace.” The discussion will be led
by Debra Satz and include presentations by Scott Sagan, Joseph Felter and Paul

Another event
organized under the auspices of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
project on “New Dilemmas in Ethics, Technology and War” will take place on
November 29th at the School of Security Studies, King’s College
London. This
Panel Discussion will facilitate a re-thinking of the ethics of nuclear
weapons; a consideration of the consequences of collateral damage; and an
exploration of related issues of public opinion, soldiers, and war. For further

The 3rd
Annual Conference of the Centre for the Study of Global Ethics at the
University of Birmingham will take place on June 1-2nd, 2017. The
theme will be “Humanitarian Ethics and Action”, and keynote speakers will
include Simon Caney, Cecile Fabre, Hugo Slim and Helen Frowe. Those interested

4. CALL FOR PAPERS
The journal
Ethics and Politics welcomes
submissions for a monographic special issue on the topic of “Supererogation and
the Limits of Moral Obligation”. The issue will include original essays by
invited contributors and essays selected from submissions to the call for
papers, with all selected essays exploring various features of supererogatory
duties and the limits of ethical obligation. Submissions should be sent to the

Essays in Philosophy invites

Essay

The journal
Lo Sguardo welcomes proposals for
essays on “Revolution a Century Later (1917-2017)” (Issue XXV, October 2017).
Several topics related to the Russian Revolution will be explored, including
‘philosophy and revolution’, ‘global revolution’, ‘narratives of revolution’,

“Transitional Justice” which will be edited by Aleksandar Fatic and Klaus

5. ACADEMIC
PROGRAMS
The
deadline is November 1st to apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in
Practical Philosophy attached to the Stockholm Centre for the Ethics of War and
Peace. The selected Fellow will produce analytic research within the Centre’s areas
of the ethics of war and peace, including but not limited to humanitarian
intervention, national-defence, pacifism, collectivism, terrorism, civil war,
revolution, war crimes, crimes against humanity, the moral status of combatants
and non-combatants, war and technology, reconstruction and reconciliation,

6. INTERNET RESOURCES
The
Hague Institute for Global Justice hosts a project on
“The Responsibility to Protect, Just War Theory, and Prevention of Mass
Atrocities”. This project website displays a range of working papers,
commentaries, keynote addresses, and interviews on these topics by academics
and NGO specialists around the world.
On the website E-InternationalRelations.info,
a student essay written by Toh Junhan postulates an “Eastern Interpretation of
Just War Theory” based on Chinese and Hindu understandings of the ethics of
war.
This website, entitled The Catholic Nonviolence
Initiative, is a project following from the “Nonviolence and Just Peace Conference”
held in Rome April 11-13, 2016. The website contains a range of information
about Catholicism’s commitment to principled nonviolence as well as a list of
global organizations signed on to participate in the Initiative.
This review essay by
Laurence Vance is posted on the Libertarian
Christian Institute’s website. It discusses a number of published works
concerning the “Moral Bankruptcy of Just War Theory”.
This article by just war
critic Laurie Calhoun on the AntiWarBlog
summarizes her previous, zealous challenges to the just war paradigm and
outlines why she thinks they have been disregarded by prominent American
political leaders and Western intellectuals who defend just war doctrines.
