4. CALL FOR PAPERS
The Journal of War and Culture Studies welcomes submissions for
an upcoming special issue on “Re-Conceptualizing Cultures of Remote Warfare”. The
issue will analyze the concept of violence-at-a-distance through essays on
topics like the following; what are the cultural preconditions for remote
warfare? How does remote warfare transform cultures? What sites of
cultural production capture or obscure the experiences of remote
warfare? How might cultural productions enable or critique remote
violence? The JWACS promotes a critical study of connections between war
and cultural production in the arts, popular culture, journalism, documentary,
and other media. Successful proposals will indicate clearly how the paper aims
to contribute to the journal’s objectives. Interested scholars and artists
should submit a 500w abstract with a short CV before May 15 to the issue’s
editors, Rebecca A. Adelman (adelman@umbc.edu) and David Kieran (dkieran@washjeff.edu).

5. ACADEMIC
PROGRAMS
The School
of International Service at American University (Washington D.C.) offers a Master’s
Degree Program in Ethics, Peace and Global Affairs. The program is decidedly
interdisciplinary and seeks to incorporate aspects of philosophical education
with international relations. Students are trained for practical careers
with studies in ethical theory, policy, and the dynamics of war,
peace and conflict studies. For information on admission, curriculum, or the School of International
Service, go to:
Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies will host one of
its Summer Programs for High School Students on the topic “Debating the Ethics
of War and Political Violence”, in New York City from July 19th-August
5th. The Program will explore many facets of just war theory and the
ethics of war, and will be taught by Ashraf Ahmed.
6. INTERNET RESOURCES
National Catholic
Reporter, an independent news magazine for Catholics
designed to promote tolerance and differing perspectives, is now regularly
updating its “Just War Theory” section. Recent inclusions focus on the changing
direction of the Catholic Church regarding just war theory, global peace, and
pacifism. In particular, an article by Joshua McElwee discusses the first-ever
conference on just war theory held at the Vatican on April 5, 2016, which
brought together 80 scholars and experts on just war. http://ncronline.org/social-tags/just-war-theory
Crisis
Magazine, a publication for faithful Catholic Laity,
recently published an article on just war theory by Andrew Latham entitled “Is
Just War Theory Obsolete”? Latham goes into some detail regarding the
limitations of just war arguments and the traditional conception of the
doctrine of double effect (DDE).
The following link is to a website at Mount Holyoke
College containing a short summary of the just war tradition and a short
bibliography of essays and articles on just war in U.S. foreign policy.
